Log crushes worker clearing debris in Ormond Beach after hurricane

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A man clearing debris left behind by Hurricane Matthew died Monday evening when a large log rolled on top of him, Volusia County deputies said.

Deputies said Steven Barna of Garrettsville, Ohio, was working for the Falls Tree Company of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. The company sent crews to Florida to assist with tree clean-up from Hurricane Matthew.

Barna was removing the log in the Halifax Plantation community near Ormond Beach just before 6 p.m.

Barna was cutting a fallen tree when a large piece of the tree rolled on top of him. A witness yelled for help. People removed the log and began CPR, but it was too late.

Barna's death is the third one in Volusia County related to Hurricane Matthew.
