Tropical Storm Harvey forms; heads to the Caribbean

The tropics continues to ramp up. Newly developed Tropical Storm Harvey in approaching the Lesser Antilles and it is forecast to continue traveling west, officially arriving the Caribbean by tomorrow afternoon. Harvey is expected to continue as a tropical storm as it moves well south of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, maintaining sustained winds below 74 mph.

Conditions are forecast to become more favorable for Harvey to intensify to a Hurricane Category 1 by Sunday afternoon, as wind shear will decrease.

East of Harvey, over the Central Atlantic, there are two tropical waves moving westward. Invest 92L has a medium chance of developing further in 5 days. It is forecast to continue west and slowly shift to the northwest, could pass just north of St. Marteen and Antigua.

There is post-tropical Gert, which was the first hurricane of the season to reach Category two on Wednesday, will continue to dissipate as it travels over the cooler northern Atlantic waters. Gert did not and will not affect any landmass. The National Hurricane Center will not be issuing any other advisories on Gert.
