Brevard County Teen Killed In Accidental Shooting

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla.,None — A 13-year-old girl was fatally shot in an accidental shooting in Brevard County Saturday night, according to deputies.

Deputies were called to a home on Lake Tahoe Drive and Sharpes Lake Avenue around 7:00pm. Investigators say the shooting was a horrible accident.

"We're not looking for any suspect. It's a very tragic and very sad event," said Major Mike DeMorat, of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the victim has been identified as 13-year-old Kasey Canada, a student at Clearlake Middle School. Family members told WFTV she wasn't even in the same room as the man who was handling the gun.

"It's just horrible, it's a horrible accident. I just don't know what to say besides it's horrible," said family member, Michelle Bass.

Investigators said the homeowner, Dusty Adkins, had been handling the gun when it went off.

"My brother was showing him the gun and it went off and went through the wall and hit the little girl in the back," said Adkins' brother, Daniel Adkins.

The teenager did not live at the home and may have been visiting the home when the shooting occurred, according to officials.

Relatives said they worried about Adkins' fate.

"They shouldn't take Dusty to jail, they really shouldn't. He just had a brand new baby," Bass said.

So far, detectives say Adkins is not facing any charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
