Day 20: Parts Of Casey's Car Trunk Shown As Evidence

None — Day 20 of Casey's murder trial on Friday was the first day prosecutors pulled out physical evidence from her car. Prosecutors pulled out pieces of the trunk of Casey's car that they said held Caylee Anthony's body.

Casey Anthony entered the courtroom on Friday just after 8:50am, wearing a long-sleeved button down yellow shirt and grey pants. She had her hair pulled back in a tight bun.

Casey waited 31 days before telling her mother, Cindy, in July 2008 that Caylee had disappeared, and that was only after her parents had recovered a car that Casey had been driving, prosecutors said. The vehicle, which they picked up from a towing lot, had a foul odor inside.

The pieces of the trunk were some of the evidence that the defense wanted to keep out of the trial.

Sheriff's office crime scene investigator Gerardo Bloise talked about finding hairs and pulled out the liner from the trunk. He testified that he immediately noticed the smell of death and said in his job, he's had to deal with dead bodies many times.

"I can say about 30, 40, 45 times," Bloise said.

Earlier Friday, Casey seemed intent on watching herself as prosecutors played her jail house visits with her family.

The jurors heard Casey dismiss the possibility that Caylee may have drowned, which is the very theory of her defense.

"Dad's blowing up at the media. Someone said that the baby just drown in the pool," said Cindy to Casey.

"Oh, surprise, surprise," replied Casey.

She avoided eye contact with the jurors, but they kept stealing glances at her as they watched Casey lie to her family time and again.

"In my gut I know she's still OK. I can feel it in my gut. I know she's okay. We are going to get our little girl back," Casey said.

However, Casey never once asked her family if there were any developments in the search for Caylee. Instead, she said she was purposely withholding information from detectives.

"If they're going to treat me like that, I'm not giving them s***. I'll try to help them, but I need to be looked at as a victim," she said in a recorded jail conversation.

"The jury's not going to like her for that," said WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer.

The videotapes showed 25-year-old Casey crying, chatting and occasionally laughing with her family. Casey told her visiting parents in July 2008, that she ached to come home from jail and see her missing child.

She thanked her parents for all they were doing and mentioned Caylee's birthday, which was about one week away at the time of the conversation, to her father.

"We all love that little girl," Casey said.

As they talked about Caylee, Casey told her mother, "She's not just my little girl. I mean she's my baby, but she will always be your baby and dad's baby and Lee's baby."

She spoke with her parents about believing that Caylee would come home. Once Caylee returns home, Casey told her mother, "I'm going to be the crazy, overprotective mom. I won't let her out of my sight."

Casey also told her parents her "heart is aching" because she wanted to be home with them, and with Caylee.

Prosecutors said Caylee died from three pieces of duct tape being placed over her mouth and nose. However, defense attorney, Jose Baez, claimed that Caylee drowned in the family pool and that George Anthony helped cover up the accident.

Baez said Casey was molested by her father as a child, an allegation George denied on the witness stand. George also told jurors that Caylee didn't die at his house, and he denied disposing of her body and placing duct tape over her face.

Casey told her father that he has been the "best father," which contradicted the defense's argument that George molested Casey and conspired to hide Caylee's body.

"I can't say this enough to you. You're the best father and by far the best grandfather I ever met. I mean that will all my heart," Casey said.

"George appears to be what he is; a concerned father and grandfather," Sheaffer said.

During one of the taped jailhouse visits in 2009, Casey complimented the family on their efforts to find Caylee, telling them to "keep the faith."

"You are doing a great job, mom," Casey said during the visit. "I know it's hard. I know better than anyone right now. You are doing so great."

The jury also saw an angry Casey. She became annoyed as her parents demanded information on Caylee's whereabouts.

"Do you understand how I feel? Do you understand how I feel in this?"

"I think that she's a very self-centered young woman who doesn't care about her child," Sheaffer said.

As the visit progressed, Casey descended into anger.

"Can someone let me...come on! Will someone let me talk?" Casey said.

At one point, Casey threatened to hang up on her parents. In another telling moment, Casey told her parents to consider her. The defense admits that Casey already knew her daughter was dead.

"You guys are focusing on Caylee. She's your priority, and I know that's the way it should be," Casey said.

Casey is accused of killing Caylee, and if convicted could be sentenced to death. An autopsy was never able to conclude a cause of death for Caylee. Court will resume on Saturday at 9:00am.
