MELBOURNE, Fla. — A driver, who was trying to flee a traffic stop, crashed, hit a tree and then flipped his car early Wednesday morning, according to Brevard County deputies.
AT THE SCENE: Images Of Crash Damage
The incident started when a deputy noticed the car had a broken light and then tried to pull the driver over at U.S. 1 and Washington Road, but the car took off. The deputy didn't pursue the car, but spotted it again on U.S. 1 and Post Road.
The car almost caused several accidents and at one point, the driver tried to run into the deputy, officers said.
Deputies said the driver turned off the car lights and went into a subdivision, lost control and crashed into a tree.
Deputies said if it wasn't for the tree, the car would have gone right into a house.
The owner of the home said he would have rather had the tree hit his house because the tree is where he scattered his wife's ashes. He was nervous it was his son's car, because he had gone out to play bingo.
"Still, the tree, and that's all I care about. I don't care about the house ya know," he said.
The driver was caught and deputies said a passenger may have fled. The sheriff's office is checking to make sure the deputy followed proper procedure.
The driver's name has not been released.
