Fla. Cash For Air Conditioners Program Begins

CENTRAL FLORIDA — The Florida Cash for Air Conditioners rebate program started Monday. The plan offers homeowners a $1,500 rebate for installing a new, energy-efficient A/C.

The problem is the money won't last. When you do the math, there's only enough money for 10,000 applicants. So those interested are urged to take advantage of the program now.

The Detter family had their new A/C installed Monday. Brian Detter paid about $6,000 for new A/C system, which is about the average cost nowadays.

"My old conditioner is costing me a lot on the power bill. It just doesn't seem to be doing the job for me," Detter said.

American Air and Heat dropped it off Monday morning.

"It's on a first come, first serve. I missed out on Cash for Clunkers with my old truck, so I don't want to miss out on it this time," he said.

Florida has $15,000,000 stimulus to fund the program, but you have to qualify first.

You have to purchase a brand new Energy Star compliant A/C, hire a licensed contractor to install the unit and make sure your home's duct system isn't leaking energy. That could cost $700 to $1,300 to diagnose and repair depending on the size of your home, all to receive a $1,500 rebate from the state.

But buyers beware. The state estimates 12 percent of Florida homes won't qualify, because most ducts are extremely difficult to reach and examine.

Some power companies can inspect for free. If you hire someone, make sure the company is certified.

However, done properly, Detter's new A/C could get him $4,500 when you add the additional federal tax credit, utility and manufacturers' rebates out there.

"They say I'll save money on my bills and that will offset the cost of the unit and I'm looking forward to that," he said.
