Hazmat Team Shuts Down Orange County Road

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A scare at an Orange County chemical plant forced hazmat crews to shut down the Central Florida Parkway for several hours Monday evening.

A portion of the parkway across the street from Brenntag Chemical was shutdown after an employee saw what looked like a suspicious device attached to one of the barrels inside the plant.

Truck drivers were forced to sit on the parkway while crews sent a robot into Brenntag Chemical to take pictures of the device.

Officials first reported the barrel was filled with highly flammable isopropyl or rubbing alcohol, which is why they closed down the parkway.

Though frustrated by the wait, truck drivers said they understood that officials were just trying to be safe.

"I guess you got to take precautions just to be safe. Because if you don't and something happens, it's worse off," said John Payne, one of the truck drivers stuck in traffic.

Officials determined there was no device attached to the barrel, just an attachment someone had welded on.

The Central Florida Parkway re-opened just before 9:30pm Monday.
