OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of seniors facing the possibility of homelessness are hoping their names are selected in a lottery for rental assistance in Osceola County.
The county says 1,449 people applied for its Senior Rental Assistance Program.
However, there is far more demand than available funding.
The county has enough money to help about 12 families, meaning the vast majority of applicants will not receive assistance.
The program is designed to help seniors who are facing homelessness and struggling to keep up with their rent.
Because of the limited funding and the large number of applicants, the county will use a lottery to determine who receives the assistance.
For seniors already on the edge financially, the program could provide a critical lifeline, but the odds of receiving help are long.
