ORLANDO, Fla. — Two people were killed and 10 others were injured in a mass shooting inside a packed nightclub on Universal Boulevard in Orlando early Sunday morning, said police.

Officers said three people began shooting inside the Glitz Ultra Lounge at about 1 a.m. as 300 people partied inside, said Michelle Guido of the Orlando Police Department.

One person died at the club, another person died at the hospital, and a third person is in critical condition, Guido said.

“Nine people were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with gunshot wounds,” Guido said. “Two people that we know of were seen at another hospital.”

Eight of the 11 people who were shot have non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

"The officer's role is usually a standby presence, and usually at or near the front of the club. OPD officers working extra duty do not do the basic security checks, like the patdown," Guido said.

The department confirmed there were three extra duty officers who reported hearing the gunshots.

“In addition to the extra duty officers, the club has its own security personnel and an extensive security system inside the club,” Guido said. “Detectives are reviewing security video from inside the club.”

OPD Chief John Mina said officers are questioning multiple suspects.

"We have a good idea of who all and why this happened. It wasn't just a random act of violence," Mina said.

"This is going to be a very intensive and complicated investigation," said Guido.

On Oct. 24, a man was shot and another man was grazed by a bullet at the club, police said.
