Troopers say scooter rider entered crosswalk and was struck by vehicle on Avalon Road

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — A 20-year-old Winter Garden woman was killed Thursday afternoon after a crash involving an electric scooter at an intersection in Winter Garden, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 2:43 p.m. at Avalon Road and Old YMCA Road in Orange County.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2021 Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on Avalon Road approaching the intersection in the outside lane. A witness told investigators the driver had a green traffic signal.

FHP said the woman, who was riding an electric scooter, began traveling eastbound in the crosswalk and entered the path of the Camry. The vehicle’s front struck the scooter.

The scooter rider was taken to Horizon West Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Camry, a 69-year-old Winter Garden man, was not injured and remained at the scene.

Southbound lanes of Avalon Road were temporarily blocked as troopers investigated.
