ORLANDO, Fla. — The Atlantic hurricane season is just days away from making history.
As of Tuesday, the Atlantic basin has yet to produce a hurricane this season.
If the basin remains without a hurricane through Friday, this year will set a new record for the latest date a hurricane has formed during the satellite era.
The current record is Sept. 11, a date reached during both the 2002 and 2013 Atlantic hurricane seasons.
That means forecasters are watching the next few days closely.
If no Atlantic storm strengthens into a hurricane by Friday, the 2026 season will officially take the record for the latest first hurricane formation since reliable satellite-era records began in 1966.
While the lack of a hurricane this late in the season is notable, it does not mean the Atlantic is out of the woods.
Thursday marks the historic peak of tropical activity in the Atlantic.
September is also typically the peak for the season each year, and conditions can still change quickly.
The season officially runs through Nov. 30.
