ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — There are still no leads in a drive-by that injured a 4-year-old Pine Hills boy as he slept in his bed, even though his family has an idea of who might have been behind the shooting.
The shooting happened on Golf Club Parkway, just south of Silver Star Road late Monday night.
Investigators said a 20-year-old man was babysitting the boy and his two siblings, ages 4 and 3, when the shooting happened.
The babysitter said he, the children and a 17-year-old boy were in the back bedroom when they heard gunshots. The babysitter then grabbed the children and laid on the floor during the gunfire, authorities said.
Deputies said DJ Tyson, 4, was shot in the hip area. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.
"He's 4 and he got shot, and he's still here," said DJ's aunt, Brindana Normil.
The 17-year-old injured his foot when he dove through the bedroom window during the incident, authorities said.
Normil said the bullets were meant for her and her sister, the boy's mother, but police still haven't been able to identify a suspect.
"I think they were trying to shoot us, because a lot of people have problems with us," she said. "A lot of people feel some type of way. I knew they were coming after us."
"Our detectives got out there, they worked all night. They went up and down the street-banging on doors trying to find surveillance video or witnesses, there were none," said Jane Watrel, of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. "It's not a matter of someone saying, 'I'm not going to talk to you.' We just have not been able to find witnesses at this point. "
"Nobody's going to talk," said Normil. "Nobody's going to tell on nobody. That's how it is over here. You just got to take matters into your own hands and listen to the streets."
Family members said they're now planning on moving.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
