ORLANDO,Fla. — An Orlando man claims door-to-door salesmen tricked him into buying a $3,000 vacuum cleaner then refused to cancel the deal.
Action 9's Todd Ulrich found the new company is run by a man he's confronted before over controversial sales tactics.
Rafael Romero swears he did not agree to pay $3,000 for a vacuum cleaner from door-to-door salesmen.
"They just do very bad business," he said.
He said the men from United Air Systems convinced him a Hyla cleaning system cost about $300.
"I thought you said $84 a month for two or three months," Romero said.
That's the contract he said he thought he signed, but when his family checked out the document with financing costs, it actually totaled more than $3,000.
Romero said he called the next day to cancel the deal.
"The lady says that's OK, someone will pick it up this day or the next," Romero said.
He said that didn't happen.
By day four his three-day right to cancel had expired -- at least that's what Romero said the company told him.
Action 9 found United Air Systems on South Orange Blossom Trail.
It is run by Nathan Mitchell, who didn't talk to Ulrich, but a manager, Nathan Mitchell's son, did.
"He said the company promised to pick it up Monday," Ulrich said.
"Do you believe people lie, yes or no? That's the question," Nate Mitchell Jr. said.
He said Romero wasn't telling the real story.
Ulrich found that the elder Mitchell had operated Dust Buster Group and Florida Air Systems, two other vacuum companies with lots of complaints and "F" ratings at the Better Business Bureau.
"The company names keep changing but what's going on here hasn't," Ulrich said to the younger Mitchell, who did not respond.
Owner, Nathan Mitchell did not respond to Ulrich's requests to talk about the incident.
Romero has filed complaints with the BBB and the state.
"It's not the way you're supposed to make money," he said.
Ulrich said you can protect your home or someone you care about by posting a no solicitation sign. And cancel door-to-door sales in writing only, by certified mail.
