ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane Isaias is not headed toward Central Florida, but the system could bring fast-moving showers and isolated storms to the region.
With the storm approaching the northern Gulf Coast, animal advocates are reminding families to include pets in their hurricane and severe weather plans.
PETA recommends bringing animals indoors before conditions deteriorate. Pets should never be left tethered, penned or crated outside during severe weather.
People who evacuate should take their animals with them and determine in advance which shelters, hotels or other destinations accept pets.
Animals should never be left unattended inside a vehicle.
Pet owners should prepare an emergency kit containing:
- At least one week of food
- Water and food bowls
- Necessary medications
- Veterinary and vaccination records
- Secure carriers, leashes and harnesses
- Towels, blankets and familiar toys
- Current identification tags
Owners should also make sure their pets are microchipped and that the associated contact information is current.
Anyone who sees an animal in distress should note its location and contact local authorities if it is not safe to intervene.
Although Central Florida is not expected to experience direct impacts from Isaias, residents should continue monitoring the forecast for possible showers, storms and isolated tornadoes.
