Ashley Moody has held the Senate seat since January 2025, when Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed her to replace Marco Rubio after Rubio became U.S. secretary of state.

Moody previously served as Florida’s attorney general from 2019 to 2025. She has also worked as a federal prosecutor and a Hillsborough County circuit court judge.

On the Democratic side, Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman. With more than 90% of the vote counted, Nixon had approximately 56% to Vindman’s 44%.

Nixon is a Jacksonville Democrat who has represented Florida House District 13 since 2020. Her legislative priorities have included affordable housing, public education, wages and access to health care.

Vindman previously served on the National Security Council and became nationally known for testifying during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment proceedings.

Moody and Nixon will face each other in the Nov. 3 general election. The winner will serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s original Senate term.
