WINTER PARK, Fla. — A community came out to pay tribute Tuesday to the Winter Park teen who was beaten in Central Park one month ago.
Roger Trindade, 15, died after he was taken off life support, but police are still investigating what led up to his death.
Trindade’s family has hired a local attorney, who said it's possible the family may seek a wrongful death lawsuit, but they are still waiting for more information in the investigation before moving forward.
But for the teen's loved ones Tuesday night was not about seeking justice--it was about celebrating his life.
The Winter Park High School student had moved to the area about a year ago from Brazil after his father got a new job.
"His love. He was a good boy. He was a good boy. That's how I remember Roger,” said Trindade’s friend’s mother, Luiz Faya.
Faya said the past month has been devastating for Trindade's classmates and the community as they cope with the loss.
Community members lit candles and joined in prayer during the vigil.
Trindade's family was not able to be there in person because they are in Brazil, where they held the teen's funeral, but a family friend read a heartfelt letter to the crowd written by Trindade's sister.
"A month ago our lives have changed. Unfortunately Roger is gone and he will not return,” the letter said, in part.
Trindade's mom was also able to listen and see the crowd herself via FaceTime.
"She was very happy to see all these people and how much her son was loved,” said Fernanda Kachny, a friend of Trindade’s.
Winter Park police said they have identified the other teens involved in the fight.
They said they are still waiting on the medical examiner's report.
Community members said they hope justice will be given to the family.
The attorney for Trindade's family said if they do pursue a wrongful death case, the family is considering putting any money they receive toward a scholarship in the teen's name.
