DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Bethune-Cookman University is telling its students to stay out of a park for their own safety.

The university is asking students to leave Joe Harris Park in Daytona Beach before 9 p.m. every night.

The park is no stranger to crime. A man was shot near the park over the weekend.

Sophomore Amaree Rogers said she woke up to gunshots early Sunday morning, outside her dorm room window.

“You could look outside the window and you could see people running through here, running through the court, like through the courtyard and over there,” said Rogers.

Daytona Beach police said someone shot a man in the hand just after midnight near Joe Harris Park.

The park has been a problem spot for drugs and shootings over the years.

The campus is just a stone’s throw away from the park.

BCU officials said campus police will be enforcing the curfew.

If students are caught at the park after hours, they will be asked to leave or face disciplinary consequences, including expulsion.

“They are just trying to keep us safe. They are not really trying to put more rules on us,” said BCU student Malcom Daniels.

The university said the curfew will remain in effect for now and there are no immediate plans to change it.
