BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Beach safety officials warn of rip current dangers ahead of holiday weekend
The July Fourth holiday weekend is here, and a lot of people are headed to the beach.
Brevard County Ocean Rescue says with the possibility of strong rip currents this weekend, they want to remind beachgoers to stay safe.
“Anytime you can, you want to swim by a lifeguard during normal operating times, and that way we can identify any hazards or concerns that ... may be in the area you’re swimming in,” said Chief Eisen Witcher.

He says that in addition to 24 staffed lifeguard towers, there will also be extra staffing to help with the crowds.
Last week, three people drowned in unguarded areas of Brevard County; and with Hurricane Elsa churning in the Atlantic, there is reason to be on alert.

Witcher says swimmers need to be aware ocean conditions can change quickly, even on a beautiful day.
‘We may be a yellow flag here, but down south we may be a red flag” he said.

Witcher says that swimmers should always try to swim near a lifeguard, and if there is any doubt about how dangerous conditions are, just stay on the beach.
“You have to prepare and know your limitations. When in doubt, don’t go out,” he said.
