OSTEEN, Fla. — Two people were injured when two boats crashed on the St. John's River near Osteen on Monday morning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The incident happened around noon just north of the Lemon Bluff boat ramp, officials said. Fishermen who witnessed the accident helped get paramedics to the site of the crash.
Channel 9's Skywitness 9 HD was overhead as a woman was taken by stretcher on a boat to a waiting ambulance. A man who appeared to be injured climbed into the ambulance as well.
The accident happened when two boats were passing, according to the driver of one of the boats.
"(It) seemed like to me he was on the right, so I went to the left. (I'm) actually supposed to stay on the right, but he was already over there, so I swung to the left and he swung right over in front of me, so I steamrolled them. Knocked them both out of the boat," driver David Denayer said.
Denayer said he believed that the injured boaters, a man and woman, suffered broken bones.
"He was comforting her. My main concern was to get someone out to help her," Denayer said.
The victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities said the crash remains under investigation
