BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — For decades, the primary way the Boy Scouts of America have recruited youth into their character development program is through in-school recruiting

State Rep. Randy Fine (R-Brevard County) is a Cubmaster and an advisory board member of The Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The lawmaker is sponsoring a Scouts Access Bill, to keep recruiters coming to the schools.

“Unfortunately, in the last several years, typically unelected bureaucrats who may not like what scouting stands for have prevented scouting from coming into the classroom,” said Fine.

Fine's bill specifies that a district school board must allow a representative of a patriotic society the opportunity, during school hours, to speak with and distribute instructional materials to students.

Fine said he is not overly concerned about other organizations demanding their time.

“The bill prevents that by limiting eligibility for this program to groups that gave been congressionally chartered as a patriotic youth organization,” he said.

The bill has made it to a subcommittee and has four co-sponsors.
