Brevard SPCA helps South Florida rescue dogs get a fresh start

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Animal lovers in Brevard County have stepped in to help with the rescue of a number of dogs from south Florida.

Officials from the SPCA Brevard County said they have taken two mother dogs, along with a number of puppies, from Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Brevard officials said a female pit bull and her three puppies were rescued from a burning, bullet-ridden home in a Miami-Dade neighborhood on Wednesday.

SPCA of Brevard Associate Director Angie Friers said that when her group heard about the rescue, it offered its services to the Miami-Dade shelter, one of the largest in the country.

"We all know that a cold shelter floor is no place for a mom to raise babies, so I asked our dog intake team if we could find room to bring this family in also and get them into a foster home. Since I work with the most compassionate set of animal lovers ever, we arranged to pick up that family, too," Friers said in a press release Monday.

Friers said that in addition to the pit bulls, her organization has also brought a shepherd-mix dog and her litter of puppies as well as two motherless puppies from the South Florida shelter to the Brevard facility.

Friers said the mother dogs and their offspring are being checked by veterinarians on Monday and will be put into foster care until the puppies are weaned  and then spayed or neutered. They will then be available for adoption.
