CASSELBERRY, Fla. — Casselberry's chief of police resigned Thursday after being put on administrative Wednesday night.
WFTV reporter Karla Ray received information about an alleged relationship between Bill McNeil and a subordinate officer Wednesday at the police department.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement called Ray as part of their research, and by 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, McNeil was placed on administrative leave.
McNeil resigned by phone on Thursday and told Ray that he did not do anything illegal, and that there are good people inside the police department.
McNeil's personnel file has exemplary reviews and shows that he has climbed the ranks from sergeant to the top.
Two weeks ago, he was given a written reprimand for a phone conversation with a city employee from another department, in which McNeil called the employee a "f****** wuss" and to "stay the **** away from me."
McNeil's annual salary was $127,000. He will receive 12 weeks of severance pay for resigning and he'll get the sick pay he's accrued. That is a total of $38,000.
A statement from City of Casselberry reads: "Casselberry Police Chief Bill McNeil has been placed on administrative leave due to an internal administrative investigation of allegations of misconduct. The administrative procedure was prompted by questions from a local news reporter and which were deemed serious in nature to warrant review. Chief McNeil has been with the department for 26 years and served as chief for four years. Captain David Del Rosso will serve as acting chief. No other details are available at this time as this is an active administrative investigation."
Ray's inquiry was the first the city had heard about the situation. The city said it was contacted by a law firm claiming to represent a women involved.
