VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County authorities said 20 kilos of cocaine was turned over to the drug task force after it washed ashore near Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach.
"Our officers spotted a group of people gathering and responded to the scene," said Tammy Marris of Ocean Rescue.
Volusia officials also said 20 pounds of marijuana washed ashore in Daytona Beach near Silver Beach Avenue. The marijuana was found by Ocean Rescue mixed in with seaweed.
"It's kind of shocking to think they'd wash ashore," said a beachgoer. "You don't want to see that on the beach."
No word yet if the incidents are connected.
"It's not something that's a common occurrence, but it does happen a couple times a year," said Marris.
Ocean Rescue officials have turned the investigation over to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit.
