MOUNT DORA, Fla.,None — Investigators said thieves went on a crime spree over the weekend that involved joy-riding on stolen boats.
Mount Dora police said three teens stole boats from the marina on Charles Street, and they are also suspected of breaking into an antique market and a convenience store.
Police said the men had synthetic drugs on them, including 100 grams of "K-2."
The marina does not have security cameras, but it was protected by barbed wire.
The boats docked at Mount Dora Marina sit in long, orderly rows.
But on Saturday and on Sunday morning several vessels were missing.
"A couple of them were left floating. One was floating under a dock, one was tied off and a couple of them were beached. So, they really didn't care what they did with them," said Lt. Robert Bell of the Mount Dora Police Department.
Police said a pair of 18-year-olds, Brandon Cummings and Kyle Morgan, along with a juvenile accomplice were responsible for the thefts and damage to the pricey boats.
"We know one of them was upwards of $80,000," said Bell.
Police said the trio raided the marina twice and also burglarized an antique market and a convenience store on US-441.
At the marina, police said the teens either made it over the barbed wire fence or approached it by water. Investigators said in some cases, the keys were left onboard the boats, which made it easy to drive off.
A squad car crossed paths with the teens just after midnight on Sunday, and officers said the teens were on bicycles, dressed entirely in black and were carrying some of the stolen goods.
"We found burglary tools, found gloves, found several keys to boats and flare guns," Bell said.
Police said they're still trying to contact some of the boat owners and some of them live out of state.
The teens face drugs charges, grand theft charges and charges on two-dozen counts of burglary.
