Criteria for issuing a Florida Silver Alert

For a Silver Alert to be issued in the state of Florida, someone must be 60 years or older and either be driving a car or lost on foot, according to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

The person must have irreversible deterioration of intellectual faculties (i.e. Alzheimer’s disease). The person must be diagnosed with the disease or a related disorder, have significant memory loss or not be able to make major life decisions.

An alert may also be issued if the person is between the age of 18 to 59 years old and message signs on the highway are the only way to rescue the person, according to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

A caregiver must call 911. Authorities will file a missing persons report, get photographs of the missing person and the car description.

The information is then dispatched into the Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center.

The information is sent to Florida Highway patrol to notify statewide alert and media is alerted.

Information is then posted on message signs throughout the state.
