Critically endangered Visayan warty piglets born at Brevard Zoo

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A pair of healthy, but critically endangered, piglets were born at the Brevard Zoo recently.

A 14-year-old Visayan warty pig named Fancy gave birth to the two on Sept. 10, the zoo said in a release.

Visayan warty pigs are native to the Philippines and are believed to be extinct on four of six islands they used to inhabit.

Because the Australasia section of the zoo is closed for renovations until next year, guests will not be able to view the piglets for several months, the zoo said.

Fancy shares her exhibit with two other Visayan warty pigs: Makinna, a female, and the piglets’ father, Pandan.

“Zoo guests often mistake them for domestic pigs or wild boars,” zoo animal programs director Michelle Smurl said. “But they’re actually members of a distinct species on the brink of extinction.”
