DCF withdraws request to revoke license of Titusville day care

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Eyewitness News has learned the Department of Children and Families has dropped its plan to revoke the license of a Titusville day care.

The day care's operator, Evelyn Bell, was previous accused of using corporal punishment on children.

Bell told Channel 9 she is relieved the case is now over.

"I'm so happy. I'm free, I'm just free," said Bell.

For weeks the 86-year-old denied allegations that she and other employees used corporal punishment at Bethlehem Baptist Child Care.

While Bell wasn't facing criminal charges, DCF made an unusual decision to revoke the day care's license following the allegations.

But WFTV learned the agency's complaint was recently withdrawn.

"I can go to sleep now. I can walk the streets," said Bell. "My picture has been all over Florida."

DCF officials said the notice of withdrawal was a legal decision made during the course of the process. Bell said the accusations were unfounded.

"That's why the case was dropped. Deep in their hearts they know I would never do anything to hurt any child," said Bell.

The day care has already filed for a license renewel. But Bell said after more than 30 years in charge, she doesn't plan to be further involved with the facility. She hasn't ruled out helping start up another day care somewhere else.

"I am thankful this is all over," said Bell.

Bell said she believes she was treated unfairly and may file her own complaint against DCF.
