Dean who blew whistle on conditions at Apopka Elementary files lawsuit

APOPKA, Fla. — An Apopka Elementary School dean who contacted Eyewitness News to help expose dangerous conditions inside her school is suing the Orange County School District.

Myla Hall claims she was retaliated against for speaking out.

Wheatley Elementary was demolished after Eyewitness News' investigations into pest problems and potential health hazards inside the school.

It's been nearly 10 months since our first story at the site of Wheatley Elementary School.

In that time, the district has had the 60-year-old building torn down, but those aren't the only changes.

Hall, the dean who contacted Eyewitness News for help, said she has had her position reassigned and she's fighting back with a lawsuit.

"I was being discriminated against, retaliated against, for trying to help kids," Hall said.

Hall said she expects backlash for sitting down with Eyewitness News.

According to a whistleblower lawsuit just filed against the Orange County School Board, that's nothing new.

"I was reassigned from my position. I was dean and that position was taken away from me," Hall said.

In February, Hall sent Channel 9 images of rust throughout the elementary school, crawling termites and rodent droppings in ceiling tiles.

"I felt I had no other choice than to stand up for what's right," Hall said.

Since Hall's position changed her ability to receive bonuses did as well.

In this suit, she's demanding back pay and damages for discrimination at work.

The stories Eyewitness News ran helped put Wheatley on the fast track for reconstruction.

Crews weren't due there for at least another year.

Eyewitness News Legal Analyst Bill Sheaffer said that could help Hall win in court.

Hall is on medical leave due to stress she said was caused by a hostile work environment but said she would do it all over again.

"No, I have no regrets, no regrets at all. Everything I did everything I said was from the heart and it was for those kids," Hall said.

The school district said it does not comment on pending litigation.
