DELAND, Fla. — DeLand police say they’re still trying to understand how a local teen was shot Thursday night.
Police say 18-year-old D’avion Smith was walking with another person near Spec Martin Municipal Park on East Euclid Ave. just before 10:30 p.m.

The witness told police he and Smith were walking on the sidewalk when he heard a single gunshot and ran to a nearby parking lot because he believed someone might have been shooting at them.
According to police, the witness told them he heard Smith yell that he had shot himself and to call an ambulance.

The witness claimed he immediately called 911 and waited with Smith until an ambulance responded to the scene.
A medical helicopter was dispatched, but Smith did not survive.
Police say they’re still looking into the circumstances of the shooting.
They say the witness has been cooperating with investigators.
