VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A carjacking suspect was fatally shot and a Volusia County sergeant's forehead was grazed by a bullet Thursday afternoon after a chase that spanned from Deltona to DeLand, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

Chitwood said Phillip Marsh, 30, was gravely injured and taken to a hospital, where he died.

Volusia County Sgt. Thomas Dane, 55, was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Chitwood said.

Body-worn camera footage shows that Dane was shot shortly after exiting his vehicle. He has since been released from the hospital.

Investigators said the carjacking was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Ludlow Street in Deltona, where a victim said Marsh got into her vehicle and pointed a gun at her before driving the vehicle away.

Stop sticks were deployed in Deltona and the tactic appeared to deflate the vehicle's tires.

Deputies said they then chased Marsh on State Road 44, where he stopped the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.

Investigators said they believe Marsh fired at deputies multiple times, and five deputies shot back.

Chitwood described the incident as a "suicide by cop." He said Marsh had been reported as missing by someone who called deputies, claiming Marsh was suicidal.

The deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Investigators said that in addition to Dane, the following deputies fired their guns during the shooting: Sgt. Joel Hernandez, 40, who was hired in 2003; Senior Deputy Adam Clausen, 44, who was hired in 2000; Detective Jordan McDaniel, 42, who was hired in 2001; and Deputy Hector Rodriguez, 28, who was hired in 2015.

Records said Marsh had been arrested 17 times since 2007 and served eight years in prison for aggravated battery, robbery and grand theft.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
