VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies took a Seville man into custody early Monday after sheriff’s investigators say he engaged them in a standoff.
Austin Mowery, 28, is now facing a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said deputies first responded to a home in Seville Sunday night for a well-being check over concern for someone’s “mental stability.”
There, Mowery is accused of pointing a shotgun at a deputy through the window of the home along Lake Juanita Road, according to VSO.
Several hours later, officials said Mowery surrendered around 2:30 a.m. Monday. No injuries were reported to the suspect or deputies.
Channel 9 arrived near the scene late Sunday night.
Shortly before 11 p.m., a spokesperson for the department said the scene was “very much active.”
WFTV also learned that a “shelter in place” alert was sent out to neighboring homes.
Around 11:15 p.m., our news crew watched as VSO rolled its mobile command unit into the area. An armored vehicle used for critical incidents was spotted around 1 a.m., and two choppers were visible above the area for several hours.
Channel 9 also learned that Sheriff Mike Chitwood responded to the scene Sunday night and that several agencies were there to assist VSO, including Volusia County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Mowery was booked into Volusia County branch jail and is expected to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
