FDLE investigating deadly officer-involved shooting in Leesburg

LEESBURG, Fla. — Deputies shot and killed an armed person on Thursday afternoon after responding to a reported domestic battery at a home in Leesburg.

The incident started shortly before 3 p.m. when dispatchers received a 911 call about an armed domestic assault at a residence on Morningside Dr. When deputies arrived, they found a person armed with a gun, and their actions prompted officers to open fire, law enforcement officials said.

All law enforcement personnel involved in the response were reported safe and uninjured. As is standard procedure following a shooting involving officers, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

Officials reported that the scene was still active Thursday afternoon, and Channel 9 has reached out to gather more information.
