NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A Volusia County sheriff’s sergeant jumped into a New Smyrna Beach marina Sunday night to rescue a 72-year-old man who had fallen from his wheelchair into the water.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:55 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning at the marina at 2700 N. Peninsula Ave.
A caller told dispatchers they heard a splash followed by a man yelling for help. However, the area was located behind a locked gate.
Sgt. Leven was the first deputy to arrive and found the man in the water, clinging to a pipe to keep his head above the surface.
Leven entered the marina with a buoy and helped the man float to safety.
The man was evaluated at the scene by the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department. He declined further medical attention, according to the sheriff’s office.
