Details released in case of woman accused of trying to kill baby

ST. CLOUD, Fla. — WFTV obtained more information on what may have driven a young mother to nearly kill her child.

Brenna Winter is accused of attempted murder, after authorities said she admitted to trying to suffocate her 3-month-old inside a hospital.

Winter, 18, of St. Cloud, first took baby Olivia to Nemours Hospital earlier this month after the little girl was vomiting blood.

After a battery of tests, the baby was sent home and after the symptoms persisted was brought back to the children's hospital and was admitted.

On June 3, doctors found a laceration on baby's esophagus as she continued to recover. Three days later, an alarm went off in the nurses' station after Olivia's heart rate dropped.

The live video monitoring system showed Winter's hands in the crib.

Several hours later, the monitor went off again and as nurses arrived, they issued a "code blue" and started life-saving measures and were able to bring the baby back to life.

Winter first denied intentionally hurting her daughter, but then authorities said she began to break down during the interview with police. She even admitted she was trying to get attention by almost suffocating her child.

Investigator: "So, when you're standing next to her and she was having difficulty breathing, what were you doing?"

Winter: "I wasn't trying to get her to breathe. I was really stressed out and I wasn't thinking."

The breakdown came when winter showed up at the Orlando Police Department's headquarters for an interview voluntarily.

It lasted for about 45 minutes, but when detectives really wanted to get to the bottom of what she might've done, they pulled out a stuffed animal so she could show them what she did.

The detective said, "She's really suffocating right? And, that was your intent, because you can't handle a baby? Is that right? Is that a yes?"

Winter replied, "Yes."

Winters was arrested on charges of attempted murder and aggravated child abuse.
