VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Deltona woman was killed, and her brother injured after a distracted driver drove onto the sidewalk as they walked their dog on Sunday, deputies say.
The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. on the 1100 block of East Normandy Boulevard, north of Providence Boulevard in Deltona.

Investigators said the driver, a 67-year-old Deltona man, became distracted by a bag that fell between his legs and when he reached down to pick it up, he swerved across the center line, through the opposite traffic lane and onto the sidewalk.
The car hit both Eileen and Robert Flaherty, then came to rest after striking a large rock in the front yard of a home.

The 68-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 55-year-old man was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

According to a news release, the driver of the BMW was not injured and did not show any obvious signs of impairment. The passenger was transported for minor injuries.
The Flaherty’s dog was unharmed.
Charges are pending following a traffic crash investigation, deputies said.
