Seminole County may build memorial park

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Lake Mary is considering building a memorial to police, firefighters, the military and community leaders, inside the city's historic cemetery.

But two miles away, Seminole County is building a $1.5 million memorial to the same people at the courthouse.

"I think there are other things that the money could be used for, which would benefit more people," said Lake Mary resident Joyce Mitchell.

Lake Mary officials said their memorial park will cost around $300,000, and is needed because it'll be across the street from a SunRail station.

"We believe we need park space in that area. We need open space it that area, it will be a restful and quiet space near the train station when it's open," said Lake Mary City Manager Jackie Mitchell.

But some taxpayers said they aren't convinced.

"The money should be used for better things than something like that. I don't know how many people would bother to go," said Mitchell.

The commission hasn’t approved any final plans.
