Drivers could be charged more for low EPass balance

CENTRAL FLORIDA — If drivers aren't aware their EPass account balance is low, it could cost them more than they think.

Driver Kevin Hallmark said he went to go through Sunpass toll lanes and it wasn't automatically refilling like he expected.

Hallmark got a new chip card in January and said he didn't realize it wasn't paying tolls because the red and green light indicators were gone.

"I have four unpaid tolls for $3.75 and if there had been indicators on those I would've noticed the issue and filled up my Sunpass immediately," Hallmark said. "When I saw that the lights were missing and the chip cards were coming out, I saw a real potential for a lot of local customers to get burned."

Central Florida Expressway Authority officials said they use email to let drivers know when their account is low, but you can still drive through if your balance is negative.

Drivers will be charged 10 cents per toll and $3 per mailed invoice.

"There are a lot of customers that are going to end up paying a lot more because CFX chose to remove these lights," Hallmark said.

CFX officials said to not be charged, make sure your account is up-to-date with the correct credit card and license plate information.
