ORMOND BEACH, Fla.,None — A 90-year-old Ormond Beach woman says contractors ruined her roof, and she's not the only one.
Action 9 first reported in 2009 how Florida Power & Light contractors were installing a special coating that damaged shingles.
As WFTV's Lori Brown reports, now an elderly woman has to pay thousands for a new roof.
Ninety-year-old Irene Lewis is working on her degree business management at Daytona College. But she said it doesn't take a degree to know she's been burned.
She said she believes a company paid by a FPL program left her with a leaky roof. She is the latest of dozens of homeowners to complain to WFTV about the program.
"I trusted Florida Power and Light," Lewis said.
Lewis said a man approached her about two years ago. He said he would paint her roof with a reflective paint that would lower her electric bill.
"He said, 'Don't worry, Florida Power and Light is going to pay for this.' And I said, 'Florida Power and Light's paying for it?' 'Yes, it will reduce your electric bill.'"
Lewis said she never saw any savings, but she did notice the noise.
"It was raining and I heard a 'puh, puh, puh, puh,'" Lewis said.
Action 9's Todd Ulrich confronted the contractor, Hester Painting in St. Augustine, in January.
Kelly Hester said her company's inspections did not find damage, and blamed leaks on poor roof design.
The Florida Roofing Association said coating shingles locks moisture underneath, and triggers leaks.
FPL gave us this statement which reads in part, "The ultimate responsibility for correcting any deficiencies lies with the independent contractor."
Lewis said she just wants someone to take responsibility.
"They need to pay for my roof," Lewis said.
Hester Painting did not get back to WFTV on Thursday. While they said they're not at fault, and FPL points the finger back at them, the Public Service Commission may have the final word.
