DAYTONA, Fla. — ROTC detachments from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will commemorate the victims and first responders of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a memorial stair climb at Daytona International Speedway.
The event is scheduled for 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 and will feature Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC cadets climbing a total of 2,100 stairs, symbolizing the steps firefighters climbed while responding to the World Trade Center attacks.
University officials said between 600 and 700 participants are expected to take part in the memorial event.
This year marks the third time Embry-Riddle ROTC detachments have participated in the stair climb.
The annual tribute is intended to honor the sacrifices made by first responders and those who lost their lives during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
The event will take place at Daytona International Speedway, with media check-in beginning at 5:15 a.m. before the climb starts.
