Ex-Titusville police officer sentenced for aiding drug dealer

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — A former Titusville police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for participating in a drug deal.

U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron sentenced Richard Irizarry, 46, on Tuesday. The sentence, for attempting to aid and abet the distribution of cocaine, also includes four years of supervised released.

Irizarry was found guilty by a federal jury in January.

At trial, prosecutors said that in the summer of 2013, Irizarry befriended a confidential DEA informant. Later, Irizarry spoke to the informant about wanting to get into the drug business and aided him in avoiding detection by undercover DEA agents. The informant then paid Irizarry for his assistance.
