Father angry after school failed to notify him of daughter's eye injury

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County father said he's outraged after his 7-year-old daughter suffered an eye injury at school and he wasn't notified.

Anthony Monk said it's been nearly two weeks since his daughter, Chanel, was hit in the face with a door handle, causing her to have a swollen eye.

"I don't feel safe with her there," Monk said. "(You can) still see a little bump right here."

The incident happened at Wheatley Elementary School. A report said that another student accidentally pushed the door handle into Chanel's face, leaving an "orbital contusion."

"When an incident like this happens, I expect the school to call me and let me know my child been injured," Monk said.

Monk said he hasn't heard from anyone at the school, but learned that his daughter was given an ice pack to put on her eye after being checked out by a nurse.

"I was aggravated. I was thinking, 'Why I don't know about this? Why her mom didn't get notified?'" Monk said.

Eyewitness News found out that the school district, as well as the Department of Children and Families, are now investigating.

"Even if it's an accident, no child should be sent home hurt without the parent knowing," Monk said.
