ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has identified the man who they said fired at a trooper in Alachua County.
FDLE said it is investigating after Earl Jackson, 59, of Miami, opened fire on the trooper, who was helping a driver with a disabled car on Interstate 75 Saturday afternoon.
The trooper was not injured.
Jackson ran into woods after shooting at the trooper, prompting a total shut down of the interstate while multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a search.
When they found the suspect, officials said Jackson shot first before gunfire was exchanged.
FDLE said it is conducting an officer-involved shooting or use of force investigation.
FDLE has not released additional details surrounding Jackson’s death.
