ORLANDO, Fla. — Construction crews loaded the first capsule onto the new Orlando Eye attraction on Tuesday morning.
The Orlando Eye, a giant observation wheel, is expected to offer spectacular views of central Florida.
"Orlando, especially I-Drive, is a really up-and-coming destination," said Robin Goodchild, general manager of Orlando Eye.
Thirty observation capsules will be added to the wheel. Each capsule will hold up to 15 people.
"The fact that you can drive down I-Drive or Universal Boulevard and it literally appears upon you -- it is really an iconic structure," said Goodchild.
Once completed, the Orlando Eye will be the tallest observation wheel on the east coast of the United States, standing at 400 feet tall.
"On a clear day, you should be able to see the Vehicle Assembly Building down at Cape Canaveral. So that's quite a distance. We're hoping that'll be a draw in for people coming and seeing it," said Goodchild.
The installation of the eye capsules is expected to be completed in the next two to three weeks.
The exact opening date of the attraction hasn't been announced yet, but it will be sometime in the spring.
