Deputies: 11-year-old student made false report of active shooter to ‘prank the Sheriff’s Office’

PALM COAST, Fla. — Deputies in Flagler County have arrested an 11-year-old student after she allegedly made a false report about an active shooter.

Investigators said they received a call Wednesday about a possible active shooter at Rymfire Elementary School.

Deputies said a child at the school said there was a shooter in the school, she had heard multiple shots and claimed her name was “Titus.”

The girl said no one in the classroom was hurt but shots were continuing to be fired from downstairs, deputies said.

According to a report, when a Flagler County 911 dispatcher asked to speak with a teacher, the child hung up the phone.

When deputies arrived, they found the classroom and spoke with a teacher who said she did not hear or see anything about a shooting or shooter at the elementary school.

Deputies, with the help of school officials, tracked down the caller to a Flagler Palm Coast High School student whose two siblings attend Rymfire Elementary.

During an interview with the student, she told deputies that she made the call to “prank the Sheriff’s Office.”

“This student learned the hard way that we do not tolerate false reports, especially of an active shooter on a school campus,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Here is a great example to the youth that threats are not a joke, and pranking law enforcement is a crime. We take all threats very seriously and they will not be tolerated.”

Deputies said the girl was arrested and taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and is being charged with false report of a bomb, misuse of a 911 system and interfering with school administrative functions.

She was turned over to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
