ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass have announced proposed legislation targeting artificial intelligence developers and technology corporations.
The bill would establish criminal sanctions if chatbots facilitate or commit crimes within the state.
Under the proposed measure, officials warned that technology companies will face direct legal accountability if automated systems assist in illegal activity. The legislation aims to stop rogue software before it threatens public safety.
If passed, technology corporations violating the law could face heavy fines, court monitoring or business suspensions across Florida.
Florida Uthmeier criticized the historical lack of regulation for major technology firms when addressing the proposal.
“For 15 years now big tech companies got a hall pass, with the addictive features that have taken so much of our children’s youth away from them, where we see self-harm and we see mental issues,” Uthmeier said.
