MIAMI, Fla. — A South Florida sheriff’s deputy is back home after being hospitalized when lightning struck the vehicle he was inside.
The incident happened Thursday outside Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue headquarters.
Safety experts say the incident is a reminder that thunderstorms can pose a serious threat, even when lightning doesn’t appear to be directly overhead.

People caught outside during a storm should seek shelter as quickly as possible.
If a vehicle is the safest option, experts recommend getting inside a fully enclosed vehicle with a hard-top roof and keeping the windows closed.
The National Weather Service advises staying inside until at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
