JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man has filed a federal lawsuit against a Chinese construction company over a building project on Cuban property he claims to own.
Javier Garcia-Bengochea filed the suit against China Communications Construction Company Ltd., last week in connection with commercial waterfront property in Port of Santiago de Cuba.
Garcia-Bengochea claims he inherited the property from his cousin in 1972, even though it was seized by the Cuban government in the communist revolution in 1959.
“Dr. (Javier) Garcia never abandoned his legitimate interest in the subject property,” the lawsuit says.
According to information from the China Communications Construction Co., the organization is currently working on a $100 million expansion and renovation in Port of Santiago de Cuba.
Garcia-Bengochea did not state the specific damages he was seeking in the lawsuit.
