ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida Virtual School has expanded its cybersecurity offerings, adding an Advanced Placement course and a new introductory class for the 2026-27 school year.
More than 600 students have enrolled in AP Career Kickstart Cybersecurity, according to FLVS. The school describes the class as equivalent to a one-semester college-level cybersecurity course.
FLVS also introduced IT Fundamentals as the entry-level course in its Applied Cybersecurity Program of Study.
Building cybersecurity skills
The pathway covers computer and network security, risk management, incident response and penetration testing, which involves identifying security weaknesses in computer systems.
Students can also pursue industry certifications, including CompTIA Tech+ and CIW Web Security Associate.
According to FLVS, the CompTIA Tech+ credential can qualify students for college credit toward select associate degree programs at Florida state colleges through the state’s Gold Standard Career Pathways Articulation Agreement.
Those programs include computer information technology, computer programming and analysis, data science technology and network systems technology.
A Brevard student’s career plans
Brent Jourdan, a 10th grader in Brevard County who takes individual courses through FLVS Flex, said his interest in computers began around age 7.
“These courses have helped me develop my knowledge of computer systems and cybersecurity while building the skills that will help prepare me for college and a future career in security operations,” Jourdan said.
He hopes to analyze security alerts, investigate suspicious activity and help protect computer systems.
FLVS announced the expanded offerings during Cybersecurity Awareness Month. More information about its courses is available on the Florida Virtual School website.
