ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida residents carry some of the country’s highest credit card balances, according to a new analysis of Federal Reserve data.
The average credit card balance among Floridians with a credit report reached $5,050 during the fourth quarter of 2025. That was $700 higher than the national average of $4,350.
Digital personal finance company Achieve analyzed information from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Consumer Credit Panel and ranked Florida sixth nationally.
Florida’s average balance increased by $210, or 4.3%, from the fourth quarter of 2024.
Only Alaska, Hawaii, New Jersey, Maryland and Nevada had higher average balances. Alaska ranked first at $5,250 per person with a credit report.
Credit card balances increased in every state included in the analysis. The national average rose 4.1% during the year, climbing from $4,180 to $4,350.
Seven states now have average balances of at least $5,000.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported that total U.S. credit card debt reached approximately $1.28 trillion at the end of 2025, an increase of 5.5% from the previous year.
Achieve calculated each state’s average by dividing its total credit card balance by the number of residents with a credit report. The data does not indicate how many cardholders pay their balances in full each month.
