George Zimmerman gives statement to police as investigation continues

LAKE MARY, Fla. — George Zimmerman had moved out of Florida, but is now sticking around as police officers investigate his role in a confrontation with a man who shot at him as they were driving.

Lake Mary police tweeted that detectives met with Zimmerman and his attorneys, and Zimmerman gave officers a statement. The investigation is still ongoing.

Zimmerman's attorney said Tuesday that the former neighborhood watch volunteer had moved several weeks ago and was settling in his new place. Zimmerman came back to the area this week for Mother's Day and was driving to a doctor's appointment when he became involved in the shooting with Matthew Apperson

Apperson's attorney, Mark NeJame, said his client fired the gun out of self-defense during Monday's encounter on a busy road in Lake Mary.

NeJame told Eyewitness News that Zimmerman brandished his own gun first.

NeJame said Tuesday night that Zimmerman was seen handling a gun before Apperson opened fire.

However, Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, disputes that claim.

"George absolutely denies having shown it, waved, displayed, pointed it," West said.

Zimmerman suffered minor injuries from flying glass and debris.

Police said they have recovered two guns from Apperson and one from Zimmerman.

Both Apperson's and Zimmerman's weapons were being carried legally, authorities said.

There's no word on whether it's the same gun Zimmerman used to kill 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford in 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting in 2013.

Police spokeswoman Officer Bianca Gillett said no charges were filed immediately against Apperson.
